YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul announced that he'll be fighting semi-retired UFC fighter, Ben Askren, on April 17th on Triller. In an Instagram post, Paul claimed he was going to add Askren aka "Mr. Napoleon Dynamite" to his "knockout meme collection."
Paul continued stoking the fire, "I'm going to knock him out faster than [Jorge] Masvidal did." Back in July 2019 at UFC 239, Askren fell victim to the fastest knockout in the history of the league (5 seconds) when he took a flying knee from Masvidal to the head. Yikes.
Since then, Askren has competed in just one fight – another loss to Demian Maia via third-round submission in Oct. 2019. During a subsequent media apperance, the 36-year-old admitted, "Retirement is definitely something I am considering." This led many fans to believe the two-time NCAA Division 1 national champion wrestler and past Olympian was on his way out.
In response to Paul's chirps, Askren, who holds a 19-2 UFC record, didn't hesitate to make his own prediction: a 7th round knockout.
This upcoming fight marks Askren's first boxing match and Paul's third, following his wildly viral Nate Robinson win, which not only garnered 1.2 million pay-per-view buys but resulted in countless memes and even a #NateRobinsonChallenge.
This upcoming matchup is also Paul's first headline event. Previously, he appeared on undercards.
Ideally, though, the 24-year-old Paul hopes to eventually get in the ring with Conor McGregor, who's eight years his senior.
Paul went viral after McGregor's rough second-round KO loss to Dustin Poirier recently, mocking him and revising his alleged $50 million fight offer to just $10,000.
