Reconnecting with British rap elder statesman Skepta for the first time since 2019's "Inglorious," slowthai has delivered another banger, "Cancelled," along with a video sampling classic horror scenes.
The movies referenced include 'American Psycho,' 'Candyman,' 'A Nightmare on Elm Street,' 'The Silence of the Lambs' and 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.' This spooky theme makes sense given the violent, blood-soaked lyrics denouncing cancel culture.
"I bet you wanna cancel who? / F*** with the cult, now the gang's on you / I'm a vampire, got the fangs on you / Now you're dripping blood," Skepta raps. The chorus then repeats this last bar.
At the start of the video, however, slowthai and Skepta show their goofier sides, paying homage to 2000's 'Scary Movie' and the iconic "Wazzup" Budweiser commercial from the same era, adding a Jamaican twist, "Wah Gwaaan!"
Budweiser's UK operation even co-signed the effort, responding to slowthai's trailer on Twitter, "Greatness Only."
This marks the fourth single from slowthai's sophomore album inspired by his legal first name, 'TYRON,' set to hit streaming services this Friday.
When he announced 'TYRON' back in November, slowthai explained that he recorded the 14-track project "during a difficult time in my life." "i am far from perfect but i’ve learnt a lot about myself whilst creating this album and i will continue to grow into a better person for myself and aim to be a reflection of what i want to see in this world," he wrote.
You can also catch slowthai and Skepta performing together on 'The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.'
