It has been nearly five years since the beloved rapper tragically passed away from a drug overdose. However, fans of the late Mac Miller will be happy to know that another posthumous album of his is in the works.
Producer Madlib confirmed that his project with the late rapper is being worked on. The joint project has been long-awaited, and now fans are finally receiving the good news. The producer appeared on Sway In The Morning to promote his new album, Liberation 2, with Talib Kweli. He mentioned on the show that he was working on a few projects, one of which was the Mac Miller project. He said, "Right now I'm finishing the Mac Miller album, Planet Asia album, Erykah Badu album, different stuff." The album's title is MacLib, a combination of both names. Madlib has a reputation for working with the best in the business, from Freddie Gibbs to J Dilla, so it only makes sense that he was also working with Mac Miller. Their new album will not be the first album to be released after Miller's passing.
In 2020, Circles was released and made a big debut at Number 3 on the Billboard 200. Circles comprised of work that the Pittsburgh native was working on at the rapper's death. Producer Jon Brion worked on both albums and finished Circles with Miller in mind. Miller's parents said in a statement, "After his [Mac Miller's] passing, Jon dedicated himself to finishing Circles based on his time and conversations with Malcolm. We are eternally grateful to Jon and to those who gave their best to the difficult and emotional task of putting out this body of work." It was created to be a companion to his 2018 album Swimming, for which he received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. His estate permitted Swimming to be released, as well as MacLib. Since his passing, his mixtapes and previously unreleased songs have been released to the public. The much-anticipated project has been a long time coming; Madlib and Miller were working on this album years before he passed away.
