If there's one thing The Weeknd has proven over the years it's this: He can rock just about any hairstyle. There's been the high-top fade, the mini afro and freeform dreads, among a few others.
He and his limitless barber are continuing to evolve, this time moving into the braids phase of his career. Abel debuted this unfamiliar look in a new profile with Esquire.
One of the most revealing moments of the piece was The Weeknd's admission that he "wasn’t too confident" with the way he looked circa 2011, his breakout year thanks to essential mixtapes like House of Balloons and Echoes of Silence.
"I didn’t think that I could sell the music looking like me," he said. This feeling fueled his reclusive persona and led him to avoid interviews. He explained, "I was very hardheaded. To this day, I don’t think I’ve ever done a radio interview. I just feel like I would give a horrible interview."
Though they're mostly covered by a hat, fans seemed to be feeling his box braids or twists. Some also likened them to Travis Scott's signature look. Yet Abel didn't acknowledge his fresh cut.
You may recall that Abel shaved his dreadlocks to mark the release of his 2016 album, Starboy. It's unclear whether a project is in the works, but he's getting ready to drop his first song with Calvin Harris this Friday, titled "Over Now."
