Cardi B catapulted to fame while rapping, "I don't dance now, I make money moves," and she's been getting to the bag ever since. But it's this latest accolade that could really solidify the legacy of her game-changing career.
Having sold more than 10 million units in the U.S., Cardi B's breakout single from 2017, "Bodak Yellow," is certified Diamond status, giving her the title of the first female rapper ever with a Diamond single.
The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) congratulated Cardi and her label, Atlantic Records, on the incredible moment. Cardi also shared her happiness and "surprise", while admitting she's "f****** tired" from all the rehearsals for her Grammy performance this Sunday.
"You know, I’ve been rehearsing all day today, I’m really stressed out, my body’s aching," she told her 17 million Twitter followers. “At rehearsal, they're tellin' me, 'Yo, you gotta meet up with Atlantic execs.' I’m like, 'Yo I’m f****** tired. I don’t wanna talk about no Grammys, I don’t wanna talk about no album, I’m just tired."
She simply wanted to go home and get down with Offset but she went along with Atlantic's request to meet at a restaurant where she freaked out when she saw the new plaque. Plus, "WAP" is already 5x Platinum – casual.
But there wouldn't be a "Bodak Yellow" if it wasn't for Kodak Black. The title is a play on his name – the "B" points to Cardi's Bloods affiliations and "Yellow" references her yellow bone skin tone – and his 2014 hit, "No Flockin'," inspired Cardi's flow and hook. They shouted out one another.
Who will be next? It's a bit shocking that Cardi hit this mark before Nicki Minaj, who has two songs that are both 8x Platinum, "Super Bass" and "Bang Bang."
Just last month, Lauryn Hill became the first female MC to earn a Diamond album via 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.'
