On the same day Big Sean celebrated his 32nd birthday, he shook up the internet by announcing his upcoming album, Detroit 2.
D2 marks Sean's first album since 2017's Double Or Nothing, his somewhat disappointing full-length collaborative effort with Metro Boomin. As the follow-up to his timeless Detroit mixtape released in 2012, expectations for D2 are sky high.
Spliced in between a few smooth snippets in the teaser video, Sean reflects on how his hometown of Detroit has shaped him. "Detroit. To me it's home," he says. "But, I feel like, it's more than just a city. It's forreal a mentality."
The video also includes myriad clips of Sean with notable artists and producers who may have had a hand in crafting Detroit 2. Here's a list of everyone who makes an appearance in order: Mike WiLL Made-It, Hit-Boy, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, Diddy, Jhené Aiko (his girlfriend), Denzel Baptiste of producer duo Take A Daytrip, Key Wane, Kash Doll, Post Malone, Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign, MadeinTYO, A$AP Rocky and Earlly Mac.
Near the end, Sean goes on to share a few more thoughts about the D. "It feel like a whole new energy in the city, you know?" he says. "It's inspiring to watch, to the point it inspired me to go harder than ever. It's like the Phoenix rising out the ashes."
This "whole new energy" Sean refers to likely stems from his recognition of the slew of artists and entertainers who have emerged from Detroit in recent years. They include Sada Baby, Tee Grizzley, HaHa Davis, Demetrius Harmon and others.
(Disclaimer: I'm originally from the Detroit area, so you'll never catch me missing out on an opportunity to shout out the city.) 😂
While no release date has been set, Sean Don claimed the album was ready to go during a Wednesday night Instagram live session where he also previewed an unheard song.
Sean previously hinted at a new album after he was booked for Coachella earlier in the year.
