Get ready to rumble because the iconic film that caused a storm back in the 2000s is coming back for a second round. The remake Mr. and Mrs. Smith just released its first look trailer, and people are buzzing.
Donald Glover of Community and Atlanta fame stars in this new rendition of the spy movie. Starring opposite Glover is Maya Erskine, best known for her roles in Man Seeking Woman and PEN15. The teaser trailer dropped on July 13 on the Rotten Tomatoes Twitter account. They wrote, “First look at the MR. & MRS. SMITH remake, starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskin. Releasing in November on Prime Video.” The teaser features the couple in an elevator together, discussing their marriage on a park bench and, of course, running away from danger. The short preview offers fans a glimpse into all the action, fun, and drama that will be featured in the upcoming series. Originally, Fleabag creator and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge was attached as the leading lady. However, she exited the project. News broke of her exit back in September 2021.
Waller-Bridge opened up about her decision to leave the series in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. She shared, “I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it – still care about it. And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision. Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work out.” The Amazon Prime series is based on the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The movie follows a couple who are both assassins and are hired to kill each other. The action comedy was a box office hit, earning $487 million. The television series adaptation seems to be following a similar plotline. According to ComingSoon.net, the logline is “John and Jane Smith enter into a new phase of their marriage after agreeing to work as spies for a mysterious agency.”
