From 50 Cent and Meryl Streep to David Beckham and Snoop Dogg: 25+ Unexpected Celebrity Friendships
| LAST UPDATE 05/09/2023
Some celebrity besties are like two peas in a pod. But other friendships are so unexpected, they leave fans wondering what the stars could ever have in common. Here are some of Hollywood's most random pals.
Jay Z & Gwyneth Paltrow
Fans of Jay Z might not be surprised by this friendship, since Jay referenced Paltrow in his 2006 song Hollywood. "When your friends is Chris and Gwyneth, then it's time to get all your windows tinted," he rapped.
But this duo is not free of drama. In 2018, Amber Rose claimed that the blonde beauty was the "Becky with the good hair" referenced in Beyonce's Lemonade album. Paltrow quickly cleared the air when a fan asked if she was romantically involved with Jay Z. "Of course not, that is ABSURD," Gwyneth replied on Instagram.
Pitbull & John Travolta
This duo is so close that they're even starting to look alike! But that's hardly surprising since Travolta was inspired by his friend and famous artist to go for the completely bald look. "Both he [Pitbull] and my family encouraged it," the renowned actor said.
"He would send pictures of me, I have all my hair, and he'd superimpose no hair and say, 'I prefer this,'" Travolta explained. "So, I thought... Maybe it's time to do it." It looks like the matching hairdos only brought the pair closer. You know what they say, friends who go bald together, stay together.
Snoop Dogg & Martha Stewart
These partners in crime go way back. Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart first met in 2008 on The Martha Stewart Show. Dogg was the television personality's guest star, and the pair hit it off instantly. Since then, they've been one of Hollywood's most adorably random friendships.
The 77-year-old businesswoman and the 47-year-old rapper even have a show together, Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party! "I've never met anyone like Martha Stewart," Dogg said in a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone. "When we come together, it's a natural combination of love, peace, and harmony."
Ed Sheeran & Courteney Cox
When Ed Sheeran and Courteney Cox met at a Hollywood party in 2013, sparks flew right away. Shortly after, the Friends star invited the singer to live in her Malibu home. "There was no rent, but I made the bed and cups of tea and things like that," Sheeran shared.
The two Hollywood stars lived together for three months. Not surprisingly, rumors soon spread that the pair were romantically involved, but the stars insisted they were never more than friends. In fact, Ed introduced Courteney to her beau, musician Johnny McDaid, in 2013.
50 Cent & Bette Midler
50 Cent and Bette Midler met over a decade ago when Midler's nonprofit, the New York Restoration Project, planted a public garden in the Queens, New York neighborhood where the famous rapper grew up. Their unlikely friendship has only blossomed since then.
"He's such a doll. I love him. He's gorgeous," Midler said of the producer. The pair even teased about a music collaboration together. "I was hoping we'd sing songs from the Depression, but he's so young that I don't think he knows any of them," Bette joked.
Kris Jenner & Jennifer Lawrence
"She was a big Keeping Up With the Kardashians fan," Jenner explained. "And somebody from her team called me up and said, 'Would you surprise Jennifer on her birthday?'" Never one to miss out on a good party, Kris agreed and surprised the actress with a cake.
After that, the two only grew closer. In an interview with Steve Harvey, the Keeping Up producer discussed some of the girls' nights the pair's had. When Lawrence had some time off from her busy schedule, she went to Kris's house for dinner. Eventually, the friends ended up in Jenner's closet, trying on clothes together!
Jay Z & Nick Jonas
Lovers of legendary rapper Jay Z may have been surprised when he was caught jamming out at a Jonas Brothers concert in 2019. The producer attended the band's reunion concert at Madison Square Garden and was filmed dancing to the song Year 3000 next to Nick's wife, Priyanka Chopra.
While the internet may have been surprised, Nick was not. "He [Jay Z] wrote me and said, 'I'm coming tonight, I can't wait,'" the singer explained. It turns out the artists are good friends, as Jonas looks to the experienced artist for advice and ideas. "It's amazing to have someone like him around," Nick said.
Mila Kunis & Princess Beatrice
The surprising bond between Mila Kunis and British Princess Beatrice is one that's been seen all around the globe. The gal pals have vacationed together in Mexico, London, and St. Tropez, to name a few. And it seems that the Hollywood actress is just as amazed by her royal connection as we are.
"Mila is impressed with the royal family, respects their tradition, and watched every minute of Kate and Will's wedding," a source told Heat Magazine. "So being friends with Beatrice is a total head-trip." Wow, you know you're a big deal when the one and only Mila Kunis is star-struck by your presence.
Serena Williams & Kim Kardashian West
The connection between Kim Kardashian West and Serena Williams began long before the reality TV star rose to fame. Previous to Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim organized celebrities' closets, and the tennis star was one of her clients. It wasn't long until their professional relationship turned into a deep friendship.
The media personality couldn't stop gushing about her amazing friend during a 2017 interview with Vogue. "Serena's the girl you can call and say anything to," Kardashian shared. "She'll never judge you, and she's never too busy for you. Oh, and she can keep any secret." A trustworthy and loyal friend in Hollywood? Priceless.
David Beckham & Snoop Dogg
The special relationship between this famous rapper and soccer player began in 2007 when David guest-starred in the musician's show, Snoop Dogg's Father Hood. A few years later, some fans were shocked to hear Beckham say that he was the first to hear the rapper's Malice n Wonderland album.
A year later, Dogg confirmed the claim. "When I make my records, he's one of the first people I send the record to before it's done, even before the label gets it," Snoop told BBC Radio. "He's a great father, a great husband, and a great friend. I love our friendship." We bet David does, too!
Emma Stone & Jennifer Lawrence
Some might think there could be a sense of competition between these two famous actresses. However, there's nothing but love between Emma and Jennifer. The pair met through a mutual friend and have been tight-knit since then. "She's [Emma Stone] my best friend; The love of my life," Lawrence said.
"We both really do love each other and care about each other as people, beyond being actors," Stone shared with Vanity Fair. "I know we'd be friends even if we didn't do the same job." These stars clearly know how to have a good time together, especially on the Red Carpet.
Justin Bieber & Kourtney Kardashian
This unlikely pair caused quite a bit of controversy when they were seen spending time together. After the Holy singer posted selfies and even a shot with Kourtney's son, Mason, on Instagram, rumors quickly arose that Bieber and the eldest Kardashian sister were dating.
Not long after the duo was spotted together, Khloe Kardashian cleared the air. "Justin has been a friend of the family for years and years," she said. It turned out that Bieber was close with the whole reality TV family, and there was nothing romantic going on between the close friends.
Jamie Foxx & Ron Howard
Some rap fans were understandably surprised when film director Ron Howard appeared in Jamie Foxx's Blame It music video in 2008. The Happy Days star acted in a club party scene, and it seems that he was just as confused by the cameo as Foxx's followers.
"I had no idea what in the world it was or what I was doing," Howard confessed to Entertainment Weekly. "I do not have a secret night-clubbing side." Despite running in separate social circles, the two celebrities are good pals. It looks like Foxx likes to push his friends outside of their comfort zone.
Selena Gomez & Jennifer Aniston
Some of these celebrity friendships prove the old saying, 'age is nothing but a number.' The 20-year difference between Aniston and Gomez didn't stop the pair from forming a strong relationship. But what is now a mutual connection started with a young celebrity being star-struck by a Hollywood icon.
"I think we were at a Vanity Fair event, and I was there with my mom, and I walked into the bathroom, and I saw you [Jennifer Aniston], and you were just like so nice," Selena recalled. "And I freaked out; I ran to my mom, and I was like, 'Oh my god, I just saw Jennifer Anniston.'" The rest was history!
Eminem & Elton John
Elton John and Eminem may seem like an improbable match, but the musicians' friendship spans almost 20 years. Their relationship started after they unexpectedly performed together at the 2001 Grammy Awards. Some viewers were further surprised when the artists hugged and held hands at the end of the show.
Since then, Eminem and Elton have only grown closer. John even helped the famous rapper on his road to sobriety. "I reached out to him [Elton John] and told him, 'Look, I'm going through a problem, and I need your advice,'" Eminem shared. This unlikely pair has each other's backs.
Katy Perry & Allison Williams
It may be surprising to hear that Girls star Allison Williams and California Girls singer Katy Perry are the best of gal pals. In an appearance on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, the actress shared some insight into her friendship with the talented musician.
"My now-husband is very close with a girl named Sophia who introduced us to Katy a couple of years ago, and we just clicked," Williams explained. "She's the coolest." The two women became so close that Perry performed at William's wedding to Ricky Van Veen in 2015!
50 Cent & Meryl Streep
Out of all the unlikely friendships on this list, 50 Cent and Meryl Streep might take the cake. The pair met at a Knicks-Lakers game in 2014 and were photographed smiling and laughing throughout the event. The hip hop icon couldn't seem to stop gushing about the encounter in the following months.
"When I was talking to her, I said, 'Give me a little bit of that dust,'" 50 Cent told Jimmy Kimmel. "She said, 'What you talking about?' I said, 'The stardust. Blow a little bit on me.'" The legendary actress then pretended to blow some "stardust" onto the star-struck artist.
Ed Sheeran & Ronaldo
What do a Brazilian soccer star and a British singer have in common? Apparently enough to strike up a friendship. This surprising duo met when Sheeran performed in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2015. After the show, Ronaldo invited the musician back to his house.
What happened next might be even more astonishing. "We went there and he [Ronaldo] showed me my dance routine from the Thinking Out Loud video," Sheeran shared. "He had learned it with his girlfriend, which was amazing." The legendary athlete was clearly a big fan of Ed, and the two have kept in touch since.
Tyra Banks & Clay Aiken
This unlikely pair became friends after Clay appeared on Tyra's talk show. According to him, the two stars "just clicked" as soon as they met. Since then, the American Idol runner-up and the renowned supermodel make sure to stay in touch and meet up when they're both in the same city.
"She's such a real person, and I think that's something people didn't know about her until her talk show," Clay shared with People. "She doesn't try to be something she's not... I think that's why we became friends." Finding genuine people in Hollywood can be difficult, and Aiken doesn't take it for granted.
Jonah Hill & Brad Pitt
When Jonah Hill first rose to fame, few imagined the jokester would eventually share a screen with the legendary Brad Pitt. But the unexpected happened when Hill ventured into new genres and worked with Pitt in the 2011 film Moneyball. During production, the two became good friends.
"I learned a tremendous amount from Brad," Hill said. "By watching him produce and watching his commitment to this movie throughout so many incarnations, and just his advice about making interesting choices as an actor." Jonah couldn't ask for a better mentor than Mr. Pitt.
Jennifer Love Hewitt & Betty White
98-year-old Betty White and 41-year-old Jennifer Love Hewitt hit it off while co-starring in 2011's The Lost Valentine. "One night we were filming, and we went out, and I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I'm going on a date with Betty White,'" Hewitt recalled. "It's the most nervous date I've ever been on in my life."
Jennifer went on to describe a rather wild girl's night out she shared with the Hollywood legend. The pair clearly bonded, and Hewitt developed a deep admiration for White. "I mean, shut the front door and lock it. She's perfect," the actress said of her older peer.
Russel Brand & Helen Mirren
Russel Brand and Helen Mirren met on the set of 2009's The Tempest, and, despite a 30-year age difference, the two celebrities became dear friends. Their relationship goes beyond the average bond, as the pals are more like soulmates in a platonic love affair.
"I'm a bit in love with Hellen," Russel admitted. It's no secret that Mirren feels similarly. As a token of appreciation for their relationship, Brand gave his co-star a diamond-encrusted safety pin. Mirren said she wears the gift "around my neck, all the time." Who wouldn't?
Taylor Swift & Ed Sheeran
This friendship has lasted over a decade, and it's safe to say that the bond between these two stars is unbreakable. In a recent interview on Apple Music with Zane Lowe, Sheeran opened up about the secrets to their strong connection, sharing how he and Swift stay in touch regardless of their busy schedules.
"She's got an amazing family, she's one of the most genuine people I know and she's never really ever had a major scandal or anything," he revealed. "Part of her charm is that she's just normal and lovely." Sheeran even introduced Swift to British culture and taught her how to make a good cup of tea. Friendship goals? We think so.
Millie Bobby Brown & Maddie Ziegler
Hollywood can be a vicious place, and it can be particularly lonely for younger stars. That's why we love the supportive friendship between famous dancer Maddie Ziegler and Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. The young ladies seem to have an unbreakable bond.
"She's always cheering me on in every single thing that I do," Maddie shared. "We have the best friendship, and she's probably the funniest friend I know. She always makes me laugh 'til I pee my pants." There's nothing like a companion who knows how to crack you up.
Matthew McConaughey & Guy Ramsay Fieri
Although they work in quite different fields, actor Matthew McConaughey and restaurateur Guy Ramsay have an unbreakable bond. The Dallas Buyers Club protagonist even presented Fieri with his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Matthew took the opportunity to explain how he and Guy met over fifteen years ago.
"I lived on the road, and I came across this show, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and it quickly became my favorite show," McConaughey explained. "One day on the road, I get the number of the host, Guy Fieri, and I call him up." We bet lots of free meals have come out of this friendship.
Jennifer Lopez & Leah Remini
This random duo met through Lopez's ex-husband, Marc Anthony, who introduced her to Remini at a 2004 movie premiere. According to J. Lo, she and Leah "fell in love right there." "It was one of those instant chemistry things where you just feel like, 'I love this person,'" she added.
The gal pals have been inseparable since. The Love Don't Cost a Thing singer thinks their friendship is strong because the two stars have similar upbringings and can really understand each other. No topic is off-limits for these soulmates, as they discuss everything from family to careers.
Katy Perry & Neil deGrasse Tyson
At first glance, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Katy Perry don't seem like the most compatible partners. But it turns out the famous singer is a big fan of Tyson's astrophysicist work. "You can't get higher pop-culture currency than Katy Perry," Neil told Variety after learning of the pop-stars admiration.
The pairs got closer when Perry appeared on Tyson's show StarTalk. "Was @katyperry's personal astrophysicist on #KPWWW for an hour -- shooting #StarTalkTV. We all should be as curious as she," the host wrote on Twitter after filming the episode. It looks like the stars were aligned for this duo to meet.
Justin Bieber & Ellen DeGeneres
Justin Bieber is a popular guy in Hollywood, as he hangs with the likes of Kourtney Kardashian and Jennifer Anniston. But a fan favorite is probably his relationship with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. The young star has appeared on Ellen's show over 25 times!
Bieber's continual appearances on the famous show are a testament to his deep bond with DeGeneres. Fans have even teased that the two friends look alike. With almost matching hairstyles, it's hard not to see the similarities. It's arguably more difficult to decide who wore the hairdo best!
Lisa Bonet & Marisa Tomei
The bond between these ladies is unquestionable. Lisa Bonet and Marisa Tomei have been friends for over three decades. Their beautiful relationship started when they co-starred in the 1980s sitcom A Different World. The actresses have been thick as thieves ever since.
It's safe to say Lisa and Marisa are more like family than friends, as Bonet made her bestie the godmother of her daughter, Zoe Kravitz. Tomei interviewed Zoe for InStyle and revealed matching tattoos with her god-daughter. We're sure Bonet approves!
Kelly Osbourne & Mandy Moore
Mandy Moore and Kelly Osbourne's friendship dates back to the early 2000s. At the time, Moore had a sweet, innocent reputation while Osbourne was the hair-dyed daughter of a legendary rockstar, making them an odd match made in heaven. But aesthetic differences aside, the celebs were great friends.
In 2002, the besties posed for the cover of Elle Girl together and interviewed each other about their fun friendship. Moore admitted that she expected the British actress to be "kind of standoffish" when she initially met Osbourne." Well, they clearly defied each other's expectations!
Blake Lively & Taylor Swift
This friendship started on the wrong foot, as Swift fans accused Lively of throwing shade at the famous singer in 2015. But once the Gossip Girl star assured the public that she was a huge fan of Taylor, a beautiful friendship blossomed. Blake Ryan Reynolds even let the musician include their daughter's voice in a song!
"A little intro there, yeah," Reynolds said of his child's feature on the track. "That was a voice memo that ended up on a [Taylor Swift] song. It's pretty amazing. My daughter has a really, really terrible ego problem now after that song." We don't blame her!
Rihanna & Adele
In a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Adele confessed she would love to have Rihanna in her "squad." A few years later, the British musician's dreams came true as she became good friends with Riri. Adele even wrote a piece about the pop icon for Time magazine!
"She [Rihanna] glows like when someone's taken a picture with a flash, and you're dazed for a few minutes after," Adele wrote for Time's annual 100 Most Influential People list. "She's fearless and full of all the right kind of attitude to be everything that she is and will be forever."
Kourtney Kardashian & Addison Rae
This unlikely duo is thick as thieves! The reality TV star and the TikTok personality began hanging out in March 2020 and have since become almost inseparable! In a workout video the besties filmed together, Addison said she and Kourtney hang out "six to seven times a week."
The social media icon is also close to other Kardashian members. "I've had such an amazing time spending time with Kourtney and meeting the family," Easterling shared in an interview with E! News. "They're all just such loving people that genuinely care about each other. That just continuously inspires me."
Kim Kardashian & Mel B
It's no secret that Kim Kardashian is a big fan of the Spice Girls. In 2015, the reality star shared a throwback of herself and friends dressed up as the girl group and wrote, "The Spice Girls got me through a lot! #ForeverThankful." Kardashian's fangirling makes her friendship with Mel B, a former band member, even cuter!
Mel was one of the few guests at Kardashian's wedding to Kris Humphries and was also at her baby shower for North West. Before the singer divorced Stephen Belafonte, the Hollywood legends even enjoyed going on double-dates with their respective partners. BFF goals!
Leonardo DiCaprio & Tobey Maguire
DiCaprio and Maguire met when they were child actors, and, against all odds, the two became best friends despite auditioning for the same roles. The young stars agreed to help each other out in the tough world of Los Angeles and have kept that promise since 1990! This might be one of the greatest Hollywood bromances.
"Every single choice I've made, I've talked to Tobey about and vice versa," DiCaprio told The Associated Press in a 2013 interview. "We've had endless conversations about certain projects and argued with one another and supported one another along the way."
Beyonce & Mariah Carey
Beyonce and Mariah may have different music styles, but that hasn't stopped these two boss women from becoming great friends. Many fans were flooded with happiness when Carey posted a picture with Queen B and their kids on Instagram and later discussed their friendship on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live.
When a caller to the show asked Mariah how she and Bey's children got along, the singer clarified it was not the first time the two families got together. "This is not the first time we met," Carey said. "We're friends. I think she is one of the most talented women out there, and I just love her."
James Cordon & Dominic Cooper
While many may recognize James Cordon from the Late Late Show and Carpool Karaoke, not everyone knows of his friendship with Mama Mia actor Dominic Cooper. Before these celebs became part of the rich and the famous, they were just two struggling actors living together in London.
"We only had one piece of cutlery, which was a spatula," Dominic recalled of the pair's time as roommates. "And I remember a really depressing evening where he caught me -- he came home, and I was just eating baked beans with the spatula." It looks like Cordon didn't judge his hungry pal, as they remain close friends until today.
Julianne Hough & Nina Dobrev
It's hardly a secret that Julianne Hough and Nina Dobrev are besties, as a quick scroll through either of their Instagram pages shows the pair hanging out regularly. While the two celebs became friends as they were both healing from breakups, their relationship goes much deeper than shared heartbreak.
"That's [the breakups] not what our friendship is about. Unfortunately, that's how it's perceived, but there's more to us," Dobrev told Cosmopolitan. "People aren't defined by their relationships. The whole point is being true to yourself and not losing yourself in relationships, whether romances or friendships." Amen!
Miley Cyrus & Kelly Osbourne
This random friendship began when Miley and Kelly both starred in the 2012 movie So Undercover. Fans were not the only ones surprised by their unlikely relationship, as Osbourne herself did not expect to befriend the former Disney actress, who she thought would be "too f****** perfect."
But Kelly quickly learned not to judge a book by its cover, as she soon realized how awesome Cyrus was. "I'm proud of her because whether you agree with what she does or not, she stands by her guns, and she's not fake," Osbourne later said of the Midnight Sky singer.
Chelsea Handler & Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston is arguably one of Hollywood's biggest sweethearts, which might make her friendship with candid comedian Chelsea Handler a surprising one. Before Jen's split from Justin Theroux, Handler cracked some jokes about how her friend's wedding plans affected her red carpet appearances.
"I always say to her [Aniston], I'm like, 'Being friends with you is a burden,'" Handler said to HuffPost Live. "You think it's hard to be friends with me? Do you know what it's like to walk down a red carpet and go, 'When are Jen and Justin getting married?' Like I'm in charge of that."
Gigi Hadid & Gordon Ramsay
If there was ever a friendship we never saw coming, the one between Ramsay and Hadid certainly comes to mind. But after Gigi featured on Masterchef Celebrity Showdown, the two brought the fashion and food world together. In fact, if you ask Gordon, his friendship with Gigi is the only reason his kids are interested in his career.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Ramsay said, "My daughters, they love me. It's not because I'm a f*****g good chef. They love me because I talk to Gigi Hadid. That's the only reason why they want to talk to me." Apparently, Hadid often asks the chef for his opinion on her at-home recipes. Can you imagine how good that pasta must be?
Eva Longoria & Victoria Beckham
The Desperate Housewives star and former Spice Girls member are the best of friends, and have been for over a decade. The two women first met when Victoria moved to Los Angeles for her husband's job, and hit it off right away. These celebs are so close that Longoria is the godmother of Beckham's daughter, Harper!
Eva helped Vicotira get acclimated when she first moved to the U.S., and the duo went on to navigate many hardships together. "We're best friends and have shared lots of life lessons together," Longoria told Daily Mail Australia. "What we talk about is between us but we've been through stuff together."
Rihanna & Cara Delevinge
Some may be surprised to hear that Rihanna is best friends with supermodel Cara Delevinge. The gorgeous women met at a 2012 fashion show, long before Cara starred in the singer turned designer's Fenty catwalk. The pair shares a beautiful and reliable bond.
"Myself and Cara are incredibly close. It's portrayed like we are just party buddies, but there is much more to our friendship," Rihanna said. "We have busy schedules, but no matter where either of us are in the world, we know we can just pick up the phone and unload on each other."
Jack McBrayer & Alexander Skarsgard
Jack McBrayer and Alexander Skarsgard are long-time BFFs. The two actors have even been each other's red carpet dates, like when Jack attended the 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards with Skarsgard, and the pair were seen having a ball at the event and the following after party.
"We were incredibly close until we spent nine days together on a boat in bunk beds," Skarsgard joked in an Esquire interview after a trip to the Antarctic with his best friend. The Hollywood stars love each other deeply and are not afraid to show it.
Zach Braff & Harry Styles
This random duo met through mutual friends and became good buds. Styles even flew to Utah when Braff presented the film Wish I Were Here at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The former One Direction star teared up at Zach's performance in the movie. Talk about supportive pals!
"No matter where I go now, people bring up Harry Styles," Braff joked on Watch What Happens Live in 2014. "It's like my whole life now is that I'm friends with Harry Styles." In an interview with People, the Watermelon singer said he and Zach were "good friends."
Will Ferrell & Mariah Carey
Some fans were surprised when Mariah Carey posted a picture on Instagram with actor Will Ferrell, but it seemed that the two stars were quite close! The famous singer shared a shot of herself giving the funny guy a beauty "touch-up" when he visited backstage at her Las Vegas show in 2016.
The performer also thanked Ferrell for his support. "Thank you for coming to my show last night!! #elf forever!!" Mariah wrote on social media alongside a shot of her and Will. In a group photo featuring the actor, Carey wrote, "The crew!!" We stan this unlikely match.
Jennifer Aniston & Paul Rudd
The history between these two Hollywood stars goes way back. Jennifer and Paul met when they both starred in the 1998 film, The Object of My Affection. After that, the actors worked together when Rudd joined the Friends cast in 2002. They reunited once more on the set of 2012's Wanderlust.
After co-starring on multiple projects, the talented pair became good pals. "I love him. He is a dear friend," Aniston said of Rudd. "We just have a true affection for each other, and I just feel honored any time I get to work with him." Jen also shared that she and Paul laugh a lot when they work together.
