On September 16, 2016, the world first met “car-stealing, knife-wielding, twerking 13-year-old,” Danielle Bregoli. Of course, a lot has changed since then. Hang on as we take you along the Dr. Phil star’s bumpy journey…

Meet Danielle

You already know the face of our story, but do you know where her journey began? On March 26, 2003, unexpecting parents Barbara Ann Bregoli and Ira Peskowitz welcomed a surprise addition to their family...

Danielle Peskowitz Bregoli. Born to a doting mother and the Sheriff of Palm Beach's PD, it was only a matter of time before she'd come to face her very first trauma - one that'd remain with her forever.

A Broken Family

“It's always been just me and Dani,” as Barbara Ann put it. You see, at just a few months old, Danielle's father left his tiny daughter and the mother of his child behind, as the parents' nonstop fighting finally reached its boiling point.

“The saddest part is the one person who is going to suffer and be damaged from all of this is an innocent child who did nothing,” the then-devastated mother revealed in court documents. Of course, it wouldn't be easy, but at least she had her daughter by her side; Perhaps that's why Barbara soon took the huge leap of faith that she did...

Life With a Single Parent

What did she do?  “When I bought my house in 2005, I didn't have a job,” the struggling single parent revealed of her riskiest purchase to date: a quaint, green house, perched on a quiet cul-de-sac, that young Danielle would come to call her home.

With no job, no income, and a helpless toddler's life now resting on her shoulders, the single mother was scrambling to get by: “I’m everything. I pay the bills, I fix the house,” said then 41-year-old, Barbara, at the time. But while her struggles seemed to know no end, her little daughter would soon come to join in on them...

Fighting Illness Together

“I waited my whole life to be a mom, and [I thought,] 'I’m going to lose it?'” Danielle's mother revealed of life's latest hurdle: breast cancer. “I was mad, I was sad, I hated life.” In 2007, at just 4-years-old, little Danielle became Barbara Ann's right-hand man, as her mother battled the debilitating disease.

With 36 seemingly endless weeks of radiation, the toddler was by Barbara Ann's side for each and every step of the way. From sleepless nights spent helping her mom, to rubbing aloe on Barbara's chest to soothe the pain, Danielle might have been young, but she was already a fighter - like her mother.

How did the child see it? "You’re a mom for life," little Danielle would remind her mother, the two of them fearful for what lay ahead for the ill mother. Of course, though, while her mischievous self has clearly always been evident, so has her talent for putting on a show-stopping performance: “I used to be a good story writer,” Danielle revealed, amused. “I could make up a story with like, eight people in it and tell you where they all lived, what color their houses are."

Where the Troublemaking All Began

As the story goes, Barbara's cancer came back to haunt her in 2014, and it would forever change life for both of them. In fact, as Danielle's mother herself put it, "The first time I had [cancer] because she was so young, she was more my caregiver.” As for this time around?

Danielle was officially no longer that timid, 4-year-old girl, once glued to her struggling mother's side. "I think the second time I had it she was 11, and she was really mad," Barbara continued. "To be honest with you, that's when all the craziness started.”

“Danielle had fear. She feared losing her mom, and that's how she reacted,” her emotional mother reflected. And so, while the young girl may have once tackled all of life's chaos with love, those days were long gone. Young Danielle began to act out more, and more, and it was only a matter of time before people began to notice.

“Dani was a gifted child, and she was in gifted classes,” Barbara Ann explained; But that didn't mean she was gifted elsewhere. In fact, the troubled student was beginning to spiral. "Other parents would complain about her daughter’s behavior, and she was picked on, especially by other girls."

Trouble in School

As Danielle herself put it, “In school, I always had a problem, from kindergarten until I left… in 7th grade... they just didn't like me.” The student's struggles soon became so unavoidable, she was left bouncing around from place to place - that was until she finally found herself in “school for troubled girls.”

What was Danielle's new reality? Hallways filled with endless troubled kids, much like herself; Students “with ankle bracelets, ankle monitors - on probation." But things were about to take a wild turn for the troubled teen: "And that's where she met Zandalee,” Barbara Ann revealed.

Who is Zandalee?

“Zandalee and my daughter looked so much alike, they could've passed for twins,” Danielle's mother reflected. A heavily tattooed, 15-year-old, helpless girl, “[She] came from a broken home. Her father was always working, mother not in her life. We kind of took her in."

Unfortunately, it seemed to Barbara that her only option was something unthinkable, “something no parent ever wants to do.” As local police officers explained, charging her daughter might have been Danielle's only path towards redemption. So, what did the worried mother do?

With the days flying by and her daughter's troubles only piling up, Barbara decided she had no other choice; And so, on one fateful day, while her daughter was at home, the lost teen was marched out in handcuffs, as Danielle's desperate mother attempted to put an end to the madness.

The "Revolving Door”

But while charging her very own daughter might have seemed like a drastic measure, it'd eventually be deemed no use, a "revolving door," as Barbara put it. In fact, the only thing that changed for the remorseless thief was her calendar, as Danielle was met with endless court dates and tedious hearings.

What was her mother going to do now? If locking her very own daughter behind bars couldn't teach her a lesson, what would?
