Nike is Going All-In on October With Día de Muertos and Halloween Collection

sports /

Nike is fully embracing the scary hours of October via a handful of fresh drops capturing the spirit – hopefully not literally – of the Mexican holiday known as Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) and Halloween.

First, the Dead collection features an Air Jordan 1 Mid, a Blazer Mid ’77, an Air Max 90 and a Daybreak Type comprised of bright colors and motifs that are typically seen among traditional Mexican ofrendas or altars prepared for this holiday.

Interpretations of the Mexican Marigold flower seen on the outer heel of the above Blazer, classic Papel Picado tissue sheet decorations most noticeable on the Air Max 90, and the tagline “Para Mi Familia” (For My Family), which sits near the toebox of the Jordan 1 Mid and on the heel tab of the Daybreak Type, gives each model a mutual design stamp.

Similar to many holidays across cultures, family plays an important role in the Day of the Dead stretching from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. This time is meant to awaken loved ones who have passed and celebrate their spiritual journey with them.

As for the special Halloween-themed Nike Air Max 97, the most eye-catching element is the ooze dripping out of the mesh and suede side panels. Plus, the 3M lining across the upper and the mint green outsole are low-key glow-in-the-dark.

Those living in Mexico already have access to the Día de Muertos spread, though the four pairs will drop globally on the SNKRS app this coming Thursday, Oct. 15. The Air Max 97s are hitting SNKRS and store shelves on Tuesday, Oct. 20, for $180.
