Get ready for a fresh Spike Lee joint, his first since 2018's Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman, dropping globally via Netflix on June 12. 👀
Spike hopped on Twitter on Thursday to share details around his latest feature film, Da 5 Bloods with Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman.
"Yes, yes, yes. It's comin' out! Comin' out!" Spike said in the announcement clip. "The world premiere – for the world, it's coming out globally." He added a message in the caption: "Please Check It Out. YA-DIG? SHO-NUFF. Peace And Love. Be Safe."
Set during the Vietnam War, Da 5 Bloods is a drama following four African-American veterans who return to the jungle in Vietnam to search for their missing squad leader (Boseman), while also looking for a hidden treasure.
As part of Netflix's Strong Black Lead initiative, the film features an exciting cast playing roles of the four veterans, including Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.). Jonathan Majors will play Paul's son who tags along on the trip. Paul Water Hauser will also star in some capacity.
Spike also debuted a teaser poster for the flick showing a strained cartoon soldier crying tears of blood. In the video above, the director is rocking a camouflage hat with a red number one similar to the helmet that's being worn by the soldier.
This is Spike's first movie release through Netflix and his second partnership as a director with the streaming platform overall. Back in 2017, he delivered She's Gotta Have It, a comedy series based on his classic movie, which ran for two seasons before wrapping up about a year ago.
In a November interview with Entertainment Weekly, Boseman called working with Spike one of his "dreams come true," adding, "I grew up watching these movies. I’ve always wanted to do one."
Spike also wrote the script along with Danny Bilson, Paul Demeo, and Kevin Willmott. Can't wait for this one!
