Nicolas Cage will make his first major TV acting debut as Tiger King star Joe Exotic in a new scripted series from Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios. 🔥

Broken exclusively by Variety, the eight-episode series will be "taken to market in the coming days." The show is inspired by Leif Reigstad's Texas Monthly article "Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild."

The riveting article was optioned in June 2019 by Dan Lagana (American Vandal) as part of his overall deal at CBS TV Studios. Lagana will act as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, along with Paul Young (Black-ish), who will also serve as an executive producer.

Though the wildly popular Netflix docuseries Tiger King captured the perspectives of several other big cat enthusiasts besides Exotic, including Carole Baskin, Bhagavan Antle, Mario Tabraue, and Jeff Lowe, this latest show will focus mostly on Exotic's journey and how he lost himself in his own eccentric character.

Graphic designer BossLogic offered a rendering of what Cage could look like as Exotic. The 56-year-old actor is on board as an executive producer as well.

Beyond being an Oscar-winning actor, Cage has other credentials that uniquely qualify him for this role. For example, he has one crazy cat story that Exotic himself may not be able to match.

In a 2010 interview with David Letterman, Cage admitted that he once did mushrooms with his cat after discovering that his feline friend got into a loose bag of the psychedelics. 😂

Yet, some fans of the docuseries suggested that Danny McBride, who has experience wearing the Exotic look – a mullet and goatee – as Kenny Powers in the hilarious HBO series Eastbound & Down, would've been the better casting choice.

This is the second scripted show based on Tiger King that's been announced. Kate McKinnon will executive produce and star as Carole Baskin in a different series based on the podcast “Joe Exotic,” which arrived before the Netflix show.
